Improving My Abstract

In this activity, I learned that every research project needs important elements, such as a clear purpose, methodology, title, research questions, expected results, and a theoretical introduction. After writing my first abstract, I received feedback, and this helped me see the areas that I did not fully understand about academic research writing.

After the feedback, I still felt a little confused because I could not understand the maximum word limit. The feedback said 75 words, which was one quarter of 300, so I first corrected the abstract following that limit. Later, we received the instruction to turn the abstract into a presentation, so it could not be only 75 words. Because of that, I rewrote the abstract in almost 200 words and made a presentation based on it.

Then I made the slides to show the work on improving the abstract

This helped me learn that an abstract is not only a short text. It must include the main information about the study in a clear way. My study was about improving A2 students’ listening comprehension of classroom instructions and short dialogues through student voice and Participatory Action Research. This activity helped me organize my ideas better and improve my academic writing

  1. Hello, Sandra! I can see you were very honest about the confusion you experienced with the word limit (the same happened to me). That's something many of us face when learning academic writing. Your reflection shows how feedback helped you understand that an abstract must include key elements (purpose, methodology, results) and that adapting your writing for different formats (75 words vs. 200 words for a presentation) is an essential academic skill.

  2. I noticed that you were confused in many things, but you showed effort and commitment to correcting the work according to the feedback and new requirements. To complete my comment I will say that your reflection shows meaningful learning about academic writing. It seems that you understood that an abstract is not just a short paragraph, but a clear summary that includes the essential information of the study. It also demonstrates personal and academic growth because the activity helped organize ideas more effectively and improve writing skills.

  3. I really liked your work because it reflects the process of improvement and learning in academic writing. The effort you put into correcting and perfecting the abstract is evident, taking into account important aspects such as clarity, organization of ideas, and the appropriate use of academic language.

  4. I think this was one of the most difficult tasks we had, since we did not have a lot of knowledge with doing research studies. However, like you showed in this entry, we had feedback from multiple sources and this helped us get better at it. Your entry seems great to read, easy to follow and really shows your improvement.
